Google AI Overviews may be reducing the number of people who click through to Wikipedia from search results, with new research estimating a drop of around 5%.

AI Overviews appear at the top of many Google searches and provide users with AI-generated answers before the usual organic search results. This can help people find information quickly, but it may also reduce the need to visit the websites that originally provide that information.

Researchers studying Wikipedia traffic found that the introduction of AI Overviews was linked to a decline of about 5.45% in search referrals to English Wikipedia when compared with German Wikipedia. A comparison with French Wikipedia showed a similar decline of about 4.82%.

The findings suggest that Wikipedia could be receiving more than 100 million fewer search-referred visits per month because of the change. If that effect continued at the same level for a full year, it could represent around 1.2 billion fewer visits from search engines.

The numbers should not be treated as a confirmed measurement of every click lost because of AI. The research estimates the impact by comparing traffic patterns across different language versions of Wikipedia. It focuses specifically on visits coming from search engines rather than Wikipedia’s overall website traffic.

For digital marketers, the findings highlight an important change in how organic search works. Ranking near the top of Google may no longer guarantee the same level of website traffic if users can get enough information directly from an AI-generated answer.

Informational content may be especially affected because AI Overviews can answer questions, explain topics and summarize information without requiring users to open another page. Websites that depend heavily on educational articles, definitions, guides and other informational searches may therefore need to look beyond rankings when measuring SEO performance.

Businesses may increasingly need to track organic clicks, click-through rates, conversions and brand visibility alongside keyword positions. Being visible inside AI-powered search results could also become more important as Google continues to develop its AI search experience.

The Wikipedia findings offer another sign that AI search is changing the relationship between rankings and website visits. A page can remain highly relevant to Google’s search experience while still receiving fewer direct clicks if its information helps power an answer shown directly on the results page.
